Kishimoto likes to base his characters, and concepts off of mythology and ancient belief systems from South/East/Southeast Asia and the Japanese Islands. Everything from Buddhism(Senjutsu, Rinnegan), Shintoism(Sharingan and Mangetsu Sharingan: Tsukoyomi, Susanoo, Amaterasu), and Hinduism(Asura and Indra) are used as inspiration for his characters and his concepts.
Kaguya should follow suit with this pattern so lets look at what we know about her already from Hagoromo's conversation with Naruto, and see if we can relate it to any Asian folklore and draw any loose conclusions about Kaguya's background in the story.
The Rabbit Goddess: This I think; Is crucial to the character of Kaguya. In Asian Mythology(as well as Aztec, Mexican, and MesoAmercian) the moon is clearly perceived to have a delineation of a Rabbit on its surface. The significance of the Full moon used to cast the Mugen Tsukoyomi is can also be related to folklore. Sometimes the folklore may use a hare instead of the rabbit but that's not very important to Kishi's inspiration/concept. The epic of Houyi and his wife Chang'e are particularly useful to the details presented by Kishimoto.
In the epic; it is not Chang'e(Who is most likely the inspiration for Kaguya) who rids the world of strife, but her Husband; Houyi, a heroic archer. In the version with the most overlap with what we know about Kaguya and the Otsutsuki family, Chang'e and Houyi are immortals living in heaven. Houyi kills 9 of the emperors 10 children who terrorize and scorch the earth in the form of suns, out of necessity. This does not sit well with the Jade Emporer(The Supreme Diety) and he banishes them to earth. Kaguya's evil archetype would suggest that in the story Kishi drew inspiration from; Chang'e wanted immortality more than her husband and ultimately stole the immortality pill that Houyi eventually got his hands on. She consumed the pill and became a goddess. In the epic, Chang'e ascends to the moon where she is accompanied by a white rabbit, and meets a woodcutter there named Wu Gang. Wu Gang; in order to return to Earth, desperately tries to cut down the Cassia tree(In Chinese folklore; the Cassia tree is known as the "Giver of Life") that grows there. This tree could be confusing seeing as how it could relate to Kishimoto's Shinju fruit, but the Immortality pill Chang'e stole could also be the Kishimoto's Shinju fruit.
My theory over Kaguya's background(using details from Hagoromo, and Kishi's most probable inspiration's is that the Otsutsuki family did not originate on earth. This is evident by Hagoromo admitting to Naruto in Chapter 671 that he wasn't too far off from what the interpretation of an alien would be. Using the folklore; the Otsutsuki can be from either 2 places rather than earth; The Moon, or another dimension. Provided that techniques such as Chibaku Tensei and Inter-dimensional travel have so far only been shown through the use of the Rinnegan and Mangekyo Sharingan, the means by which Kaguya could have traveled are not known seeing as how she only acquired Occular techniques upon eating the Shinju's fruit. But as far as the folklore; I'll just throw up an informed opinion and say she was sent/banished to Earth as the folklore implies.
Kaguya had 2 children; Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki. So she more than Likely had a husband as well; probably someone who will fit the similarities of Houyi(from the folklore) What Kaguya and her husband/or just Kaguya alone were/was banished for: could be anything; but should it relate to the folklore; was probably an act of heroism(Similar to Houyi killing 9 of the Jade Emperor's 10 sons in order to save the people of earth) by either her husband/or her that is seen by a higher power as defiant or unforgivable act, and being worthy of exile.
In the folklore: Chang'e; after consuming the immortality elixir goes to the moon. Soon after Houyi dies and his soul goes to the sun. Chang'e on the Moon and Houyi on the Sun is seen as Yin and Yang respectively. If we look to the most recent chapter, Kaguya immediately notices the crescent moon and yellow sun on Sasuke's, and Naruto's palms, respectively. Referring back to the folklore the Moon and the Sun together depict Yin and Yang. She then deduces that it was in Hagoromo who gave them "this" jutsu. But Hagoromo himself detests Ninjutsu, so the notion of giving Naruto and Sasuke a Justu would not be supportable given his current stance on Ninjutsu. What Hagoromo most likely gave the two; was a Ninshu technique... A Yin Yang Release Ninshu Technique.
Hagoromo's predisposed information on Mugen Tsukoyomi suggests that someone has used it before, that someone most likely being Kaguya. Hagoromo and Hamura; having been referred to by there mother in a more or less negative sense in Chapter 679, were probably the ones who put a stop to Kaguya with the use of Yin and Yang Release Ninshu. Kaguya noticing the exact same markings and abilities between Naruto and Sasuke recognizes that they are capable of defeating her with the technique given to them by Hagoromo as it has already done before. The technique most likely strips her of all her Chakra and redistributes it to everyone and weakens Kaguya.
Last but not least, Hagoromo describes Mugen Tsukoyomi as a means of enslaving people. This matches with Kaguya's plan to turn everyone into White Zetsu. The question here is what she needs an army for, considering everyone has been subjugated under her technique. Considering her unearthly origins; she is probably planning revenge on the civilization or power that banished her to Earth, and plans to use the White Zetsu as her army. We've seen a lot of Obito traveling between two different dimensions; so that would probably be the more comfortable alternative to space travel.
