Re-reading the Deathnote now, I can't help wondering....

Why didn't Light go to NY to meet Mello instead of Mogi?

After all, Near said "I don't think that L or Kira himself would come here." Should Light have foreseen this, being so brilliant and all?

Since neither Mello nor Near known Light's identity, they would immediately think that Light is NOT L nor Kira. Meanwhile, Light would know the face of mello, and if he had made the eye trade, he could even know the face of Near. I mean, he was pretty desperate at that point, so shortening the lifespan would not be a big deal.

He could have similarly hidden a piece of notebook in his watch and written down the names of Near and Mello discreetly... and perhaps even fake his own death or something to escape in the commotion.

He would of lived longer and would have not been found out about and killed if he didn't do the eye trade.

But why would he be necessarily found out though? Being the crafty one he is, I am sure he could have found a way to fool HQ (or if not, he could also just kill them, it's like 4 people anyway), and if Near and Mello are dead it would probably not be that hard to escape...

OR, at this point --

-- Light himself could have shown up pretending to be one of the NPA men who are doubting the new L. I am surprised at how easily Light was playing into Near's hands...

because if Light went and killed Near and Mello then the HQ would have knew he was Kira. Also he couldn't be sure if Near and Mello didn't have any cameras recording everything. Also, if the other police officers working with Light were killed, whoever knows about them would pretty much assume Light was Kira because L always thought Light was Kira and had everyone he worked with on the case think Light was Kira . Light wasn't perfect genius and he made mistakes.
spoiler
Somewhere I read that Near/Mello were given details of the Kira case and L's suspicions/deductions while L was alive because they were his successors and he wanted them to practice on real cases.

spoiler
Light pretending to be L put a big target on his head. BUT the reason Light didn't go in place of Mogi was because he wanted Mogi and the other officers on the case to trust him and believe he is not actually Kira. Since everyone's goal is to catch Kira, Light says that every little bit helps and its fine for Mogi to meet with Near/Mello since he places trust in him to help catch Kira.

spoiler
However, ^ that works against Light because Near hears about how Chief Yagami(of all ppl) pretends to wanna kill Light in the backseat , and if Light was actually Kira, Kira/Light would kill him. Near wonders why Yagami would "put his career/life" on the line while pretending to wanna shoot this suspect/prisoner(light) who worked with them on the case to catch Kira(light) (who had the idea to turn himself in as a prisoner) for just a random nobody unless he had strong ties/relationship to him. Near realizes that Mr.Yagami must be the father of the prisoner/suspect(light).

But Light could have easily killed off the HQ. As I said. There would be no problem. He doesn't need the HQ if Mello/Near are dead.

I don't agree with the first spoiler; if Mello or Near had known L's deductions, they would not go through any of that trouble of finding out about the details like shinigami, fake rules, etc... They figured these things out on their own, and quite brilliantly too.

I don't see why going to meet Mellow himself would make the HQ suspicious. And as I said, he could have killed the HQ right before they were about to connect the dots, since you can set the time of death and everything.

What I am saying is, going to Mello/Near himself would give him a clear chance of killing them both. I can't believe that possibility wasn't even considered.

Actually think about it, this was the time he was supposed to die, so if he did the eye trade he would have died about 3-4 years after L died from a random cause.

Cause you gotta give up half your remaining lifespan.

Going to meet Mello is dangerous for anyone who goes to meet Mello. He knows Mello and Near are very smart and doesn't want to jeopardize his life at that time. He'd rather do it (kill Mello) miles away and make it seem like someone else did it.

Only a handful of people know about the certain meeting that take place and Near already announced his suspicions of L2 being Kira.
I think that's what that particular meeting was for in the first place.. the possibility that L2 is Kira.

Yeah, but if Light is the sole survivor of the "people who worked on the Kira case" ppl would suspect him of being Kira. Who knows if other ppl knew about the people working on the case. Light isn't smart enough to control the whole country or city by himself. Kira and the police sort of go hand in hand back then. I mean he was going to attempt to control the world in the end, but he always had someone trying to stop Kira.

Meeting with Mello/Near puts Light in danger of being captured,(the meeting place is a place he's never been to before and doesn't know the appearance of it, he has to follow orders to get there) and if he becomes a prisoner of Near/Mello then how will he escape? If either M/N die, Light will be more than suspected of being Kira. Also they could kill him. They could contact the HQ and suspect if nobody answers, (or depending on who answers) that Kira had killed them already or prior to the time Light meets with M/N.

How would L be killed if he had killed off Near, Mello, and HQ in the beginning? Plus I am saying that the eye trade would have happened right before Light went to meet Mello as "L".

Well I think Near was pretty certain that L2 himself would not come to meet him. Taking this risk of going there himself would be the ultimate trick. As I said, how could Near or Mello know that Light is actually L? What would give him away? Light would just need to act the same as Mogi had acted, as if he couldn't give away any information. It would have played out quite nicely I think.

I don't know, I feel like with his social skills, Light could have easily found more minions whom he could have disguised as the new NPA. It would have "been a drag" as Shikamaru says, but it would fly if it were undercover.

Mogi did give away info though.. You saw how Light was in the end though, he couldn't contain/maintain his composure and gave himself away too easily because he thought he had won already. He spoke too much and said too many incriminating things. He's smart , but he does make pivotal mistakes.

Sure, he could have become prisoner, but the trick with the watch is pretty discreet. Somehow I am sure he could have pulled it off. And just because Near and Mello die, doesn't mean 100% for the rest of the people that this guy is Kira. After all, they wouldn't have seen him writing anything, would they? And in any case, he could have prepared more notebook pages for the case of getting rid of the rest of the people to escape.

It was already a pivotal mistake to not realize his own father will want to go instead of Matsuda. Matsuda would have killed Mello while Chief Yagami had hesitated. Light should have seen this coming by using his "superb 10/10 social skills".

I am still disappointed Light didn't even consider the possibility of doing that.

I guess I have...Why are you saying he would have died 3-4 years after L died from a random cause? What does this have to do with L? I was talking about making the trade before going to meet Near and Mello as "L" while making him think he is neither L nor Kira.

Light already considered the possibility of how easy things would be if he had the eyes, but Light (not being sure of when he would actually die) wanted to live a long life as God of the New World. Not shorten it in any way especially by gaining eyes just to do the same thing he does without the eyes. That's why he had Misa.

Also using the Death Note makes the person especially fearful of dying more than usual.

So you admit Light makes pivotal mistakes then? Lol
Matsuda makes mistakes and isn't the same thinker that Light L were and Chief Yagami is closer to their thinking than Matsuda.

Ok, somewhat unrelated question but still about Deathnote....

Why didn't neither Light nor L say anything like "what notebook is he talking about??" after Higuchi talked about forfeiting the notebook with Rem???

Wasn't that a key piece of evidence right there, why didn't anyone question what he said?

Also... is there anything L could have logically done after he realized Light had gained back his memories to avoid dying and prove Light is Kira?

Relatively. His defeat of L was pretty darn brilliant. I admit this even though I hate him. Technically (and sadly), no one person alone could have defeated him, it was literally the combination of Near and Mello.
