Kishimoto has made Kaguya a fascinating character and I was able to find several character parallels of her from other works of fiction and mythologies. Her name and appearance is a direct reference to the moon princess from the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, but it doesn't end there for me.
Kaguya has inspired other works of fiction as well, as the tale of Thumbelina stems from her, being that she too was born from a plant, was no bigger than a thumb and found by a lonely old man who longed for a child.
Inuyasha parallel
There is also a demon antagonist of the second Inuyasha film who takes on the robe, power and appearance of Kaguya from the Tale of the Bamboo cutter by devouring her. She then attempted to freeze all of time in an eternal night using the power of her robe. The main antagonist the while series, Naraku planned to absorb her to gain this power.
Biblical Parallel: Eve and the Harlot
Everyone I'm sure is aware of the Book of Genesis from the Bible. Of the first man Adam and the first Woman Eve who were created by God in Paradise but were kicked and given free will when Eve was tempted by Lucifer in the form of a serpent to eat the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. Adam and Even later had two sons, Cane the older and Abel the younger. Cane became jealous of the kind and selfless natured Abel and murdered him.
In the book of Revelations the Apocalypse, a harlot said to be the incarnation of all of Man's sins rides a beast with ten horns.
Final Fantasy 7 Parallel: Jenova
In final fantasy 7, eons before the time of the main characters, a calamity and world eater from the skies known as Jenova, who took on the appearance of a pale-faced woman with long white hair descended from the skies and with the life forces of other planets she had absorbed attempted to devour the earth's life force. The ancients known as the Cetra however with their holy magic derived from the planet's heart were able to stop her. However, her body survived and pieces of her essence spread throughout the planet's life force or lifestream until they crystalized into what was called the black materia. Materia is the crystalized from of all life energy on the planet that grants magic or nature powers to the characters through the knowledge of the life stream granted by the ancients within. The ancients were unable to find Jenova's body, but were able to gather her black materia, the cosmic power to summon meteors and hid it from those who sought such power by shaping and disguising it as a temple.
Near the present day, a scientist and the father of one of the main heroines of the game in an excavation to find the remains of the cetra uncovered the preserved body of Jenova. Believing she was an ancient, he was exhilarated and wished to study her. However, upon further search in the Cetra province, he was able to find a real, living Cetra. The last of her kind who told him who Jenova really was and her history; but before the doctor could destroy the body, it was seized by another wicked scientist, who used her cells to create super warriors known as SOLDIER. Many died from the infusions while others transformed into monsters. Finally, the doctor injected a high dose of the cells into a human infant who in turn grew up to become the perfect SOLDIER known as Sephiroth. As a result, he protentially obtained all her powers, eventually found out who he was, went mad and took her body and materia for himself, planning to destroy the world by becoming what she was: a cosmic calamity.
Warcraft Parallel: Highborne Queen Azshara
In the early era of the world of Azuroth, a night elf queen known as Azshara and a number of her people obtained arcane powers from the well of Eternity her city was built around. An arcane void that gathered the nature energies of azuroth and the planets. It also granted longevity and immortality to those who lived on it. With this power, she became corrupted, the most powerful entity in the world and planned to summon the dark titan Sargeras through the well's powers to destroy the world so that she could become his queen. Her efforts were thwarted however by the night elves who were uncorrupted by the well's arcane energies and with their powers, they destroyed it, leaving behind a spiraling Maelstrom that cleaved the continents, transformed Azshara and her highborne into serpent beings called the naga and sucked them in.
C. S. Lewis Novels Parallel: The White Witch
If anyone here is unaware of the Narnia novels and films, in the first book, the fantasy world of Narnia is ruled by an evil queen called Jadis, also known as the White Witch who dictates the world with an iron fist. Her powers grant her the ability to entrance people, petrify them and instill an eternal winter onto the world. Here is origins from wiki.
"In The Magician's Nephew, Jadis is revealed as a native of Charn, a city in a different world entirely from Narnia. She was the last of a long line of kings and queens, who began well but grew evil over many generations and conquered the entire world of Charn. Jadis, a powerful sorceress, fought a bloody war of rebellion against her sister. On the point of defeat, Jadis chose not to submit, but spoke instead the Deplorable Word that destroyed all life on Charn except her own. She then cast a spell of enchanted sleep upon herself, to await someone who could rescue her from Charn.
Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer arrive in Charn through Digory's uncle's magic, and find the bell that Jadis left to break the spell. Despite Polly's warning not to ring the bell, Digory does so. Jadis is awakened and by holding on to them is transported with them back to Edwardian London. She sets out to conquer Earth, but finds that her magic does not work there. Digory, seeking to correct his mistake, attempts to transport her back to Charn, but they end up instead in the world of Narnia at the moment of its creation.
Jadis immediately starts scheming to become the mistress of this new world. She eats the Fruit of Everlasting Life, acquiring immortality and her white-coloured skin. She then travels to the North to develop her magic anew, becoming the first of the "Northern Witches"."
Chrono Trigger Parallel: Queen Zeal
In the Square Soft game called Chrono Trigger, the final antagonist is a Queen of a ten thousand year old vain civilization living in the islands in the clouds and is more advanced than common man. We learn that she is the mother of the game's original antagonist who went back in time and turned anti hero to stop her and that she has gone mad and is planning to use her magic and technology, derived from a calamity of the world beneath it's crust known as Lavos to destroy Earth. Lavos takes the form of a near invincible horned beast and is prophecised to destroy the world in AD 1999 when it erupts from the ground after being asleep for eons, gathering cosmic power.
Reboot Parallel: Daemon
If anyone is unaware of the CGI animated series called Reboot, it is about the inner worlds of computers where hackers and engineers create A.I. spites and cities and test them with game cubes they drop on them via a download. Viruses too take on humanoid forms and follow their programming to either conquer or destroy these "systems." Daemon was one of these. Presumed to have been an internet worm (super virus) created by a religious zealot who detested all technology, she took the form of a young, regal looking girl rather than an abstract looking virus as previous ones did. Daemon in end turned out to be the most powerful entity in the net. She was physically indestructible, possessed enormous strength and transfinite powers and referred to herself as the bringer or goddess of order along with her followers. Her power allowed her to instantly infect and control the mind of anyone she touched it with, whether it be through the eggs she sent to systems or the gigantic data clouds she could exhibit from her being. This allowed her to take control of any sprites and binomes throughout the net no matter the system as well as manipulate web creatures that could destroy whole systems and open web portals. With this power spread throughout systems through her army, she was able to instantly take control of 98 percent of the net. At first it was believed she wanted to simply control and rule everyone or exact "peace" as she called, but in the end you learn that she is a cron virus. A virus meant to force all systems and their inhabitants to commit suicide by speaking their codes outloud. In the end, when she herself killed herself by fragmenting after her time limit had expired and her final solution was made to instantly kill everyone she had infected at once, the protagonist sprites were forced to use a former antagonist virus who had become their friend and a fellow sprite to intercept and overwrite Daemon's infection and suicide command which in turn fragmented and killed the good virus herself.
X-Men Parallel: Jean Grey/Phoenix/Dark Phoenix
Jean Grey is one of the main heroines of the x-men comics. She is a level five mutant, the most powerful class with telekinetic and telepathic abilities. In order to save the x men, she piloted a crashing shuttle and was exposed to fatal levels of radiation. However, with her determination, her full powers unlocked and she became the cosmic entity known as phoenix, survived and saved them all. However, over time, her new cosmic powers gave way to a new personality and corrupted her. This personality came to full fruition after a villain group known as the hellfire club captured her and tried to manipulate her mind. As a result, she destroyed a star and an entire solar system. In a moment of clarity however, she was able to regain control of herself and commit suicide. In a later retconned arc where she is revived, it is stated the phoenix was actually a cosmic entity that took residence in her.
Kaguya has inspired other works of fiction as well, as the tale of Thumbelina stems from her, being that she too was born from a plant, was no bigger than a thumb and found by a lonely old man who longed for a child.
