It's a traditional Japanese name, and that just happened to be the pronunciation of the name. If names are supposed to sound how they look then English names have a lot to answer for...

Phil? Should that be pronounced "Puh-Hill"? Don't think so, that would just be weird. XD

It's because in Japanese, sounds like "su" are pronounced quickly.

It's pronounced Ekusu-kari-baa in Japanese.
