...WTF....exactly what is Naruto's speech abnormality??? This may be a hella old topic but every damn translation I read has something different.

Was a consensus ever reached?

For the anime they make him say believe it. Most translators refuse to put believe it. He just says dattebayo, which has no translation. It's just a thing. His mom is the one that says ya know, so I think most translators put ya know.

What prompted my question is in chapter 498 his mother says "Like"....so I was like WTF, I thought the accepted translation was 'ya know.'

It has no meaning. But translates put something there to let you know he's saying it. They do it in the anime to help with lip synchronization.

Not sure. I understand lots of made up/signature japanese words and phrases are difficult to translate into english. Crow in Deadman Wonderland had an even harder one than Naruto's according to the translators.
