We all know that Kishimoto was and is a big dragon ball fan, and he has copied(inspired) a lot from dragonball.

Kaio-ken is technique which increases the users Ki(chakra) at the cost of increasing their heart beat and it also takes a large toll on the body if utilized more.

The eight gates are the release of chakra gates within one's body, which increases their power and also takes a toll on the body same as the kaio-ken.

Gai's eight gate has an crimson aura, same as kaio-ken.
So do you think that it is based on Kaio-ken or not?

This is an interesting thread with a lot of well constructed arguments, and it's definitely a subject I think about often. Obviously, the answer to this question is highly subjective, and I don't believe there is a single right answer. I like reading everyone's opinion on the matter, though, and I hope this discussion goes on.

They do seem really similar, don't they?
Both damage the user more as it goes to the next level.

Nope. I've seen this type of ability in another series called Durara. (or something like that) Kaoken=temporarily increasing your energy, but to balance it out, the matter in your body takes a toll. 8 gates is just removing the limits of the body and unleashing one's full potential. Other than both being temporary boosts that damage oneself, there's really nothing connected in the concepts. Anyone that would say it's "copied" should slap themselves and read the definition of copy in the dictionary.

Who th **** is saying it's a copy? Op is asking if kishi got inspired to make 8 gate from seeing kaioken. Which he most likely did but was inspired by other things too.

There are plenty of power boosts in shonen battle manga that have damaging effects to the body. Kishi could have gotten inspiration from Kaioken but eh I doubt it since its a common theme

When we get down to laymen terms, both increases power, and in the process both damage their own bodies, though that specific toll can be decreased if you train your body or energy control.
You should read everything more carefully before you make a judgement I wrote "copied(inspired)", which if you read carefully that means that Kishi got Inspired by Aki, and did not made a direct copy out of Aki's work.

The Thread Starter... :| However, he parenthesized inspired when copied should had quotation marks or inspired should have replaced copied.

It had most been overlooked.
