When So6P was telling naruto about the past, The pictures I guess represents past moments in history. So by the picture people were connected to the tree, so she has before already used the infinite Tsukyami on the world and the world was not destroyed then so why would it be now. My assumption is old man sage and his brother somehow escaped or were never caught in the genjutsu. They defeated their mom/juubi and released the jutsu.
