I do feel that it was necessary to stop the coup before it was allowed to happen, and really, waiting for the Uchiha to attack would had been irresponsible. The end result would had likely been another ninja world war and the complete destruction of Konoha, that couldn't be allowed to happen.

That said, I do feel that Itachi had alternatives that he could had taken. Itachi himself admitted that it may had been possible to stop the coup without killing anyone that he didn't try. I also feel that he could had told people about "Madara" and rallied Konoha and the Uchiha together against a common enemy instead of being played against each other as they were.

Also, Itachi was the worst double-agent in history. He did nothing to help Konoha or stop Akatsuki in 10 years. To be honest, Orochimaru helped more than Itachi ever did.

The majority are against Danzo and what he did for the Leaf and the shinobi world, so I wanted to see if Itachi gets the same treatment.

Itachi killed all grannies, women, children, infants and handicap people in his own clan. He's a traitor and a lapdog who got an identity crisis even after his death.

More innocent people would have died, though. The main reason why I'd say he was a hero is because he truly never betrayed Konoha. His intentions was to always protect the Leaf. He warned the elders that Tobi was still alive. He stopped the Edo Tensei Jutsu. He prevented a civil war between the Uchiha and the rest of the Konoha. Hence, Itachi also limited the possibility of other nations attacking Konoha (since nations will strike others when they are at a weak point). He did what he have to do. Itachi will always remain a hero in my eyes.

If random children and eldery were alive, he would of been suspected by the rest of the Akatsuki. I doubt they would of liked that. Leaving his brother alive so he could take his eyes and achieve MS in the future was a plausible story to them.

It certainly is interesting how that works.

In addition, the survivors could have turned out like Sasuke in a quest for revenge, which would leave an exceptional margin of error in Itachi's entire plan. It would poke holes all over and undermine his goals.

I may or may not agree with it, but I can see why he did it.
