If you look at the panel where he used chibaku tensei you can see the curvature of the earth, judging by just how curved it is, madara would literally be halfway to the moon, placing him in space. Well, he DID say he needed to get close to it.

Everyone who said hes not in space is mistaken because if you think hes in in a layer of earths atmosphere our atmosphere only extends to 10,000 km ( the highest layer being the exosphere ), while the moon is 382,500 km away from earth so is definitely in space. :vision:
