His death was PIS, there was no other way to kill him. Light was forced to turn crazy by the plot. Also Mikami screwed his plan by acting on his own
Light is an awesome character. His death is a fault of Death Note's plot, not his character's

What i don't like about his death was that he lost his cool and had a villainous breakdown
About Mikami, Matsuda mentions that Near used the death note on him

The way Light lost his cool makes it obvious that PIS was largely involved. Also, Light has been using the Death Note for a long time (5 years or so). Death Note would change anybody's personality. Light had no friends of his own, unlike Lelouch (who had the Black Knights fighting for him until the last 6/7 episodes).
Only thing I don't like about Light is, he underestimated Misa. Misa was not very intelligent but she was a good Kira. Light could have trusted her and planned things together with her. If Misa knew how Light was working, she could have helped him tremendously. Misa was the person behind L's death. Light tried to do everything on his own.
But I can't ignore how Light fought against the task force, CIA etc. and hid his identity for 5 years. He also took L's place and worked simultaneously as both Kira and L.
At the end, it was inevitable that Death Note would corrupt the owner and be the cause of death, just as Ryuk said in the beginning
