Was Ashura really that superior over Indra?

If you think about, Hashirama with NO tailed beast, defeated Madara who had the help of a complete 9 tailed beast. I thought both reincarnations were supposed to be equals or near equal. So would that mean that Ashura surpassed Indra, or it differs between each reincarnation?

In Ideals yes, but in power they were equal.

They destroyed themselves as Hagormo stated. I believe this means they were equal.

I think it varies. Controlling the Nine Tails is part of Madara's jutsu, so it's not like the power of the Nine Tails is independent of Madara's power.

There's more to the Madara/Hashirama fight than just what we saw. Madara clearly survived, so the one that Hashirama "Killed" wasn't the real thing. It's very likely Madara either set aside some of his power to perform a fail-safe (think Muu cell splitting, etc) or Madara never intended to kill Hashirama, but actually just wanted to take Hashirama's power and fake his own death.

They are equal as stated as by their father.

Hashirama is not stronger than Madara or vice versa. At the end of the battle, the situation was pretty precarious both were worn out. The only reason Hashirama won was because he was smart enough to make a wood clone since he knew Madara had deactivated Sharingan and wouldn't be able to tell the difference. It could've ended very differently.

I would consider the 9 tails summon part of Madara's arsenal instead of just outside help. It's like if Jiraiya summons the sage toads to go into sage mode. If you were considering him battling someone else, you would include the sage toads in the battle because you would just consider them part of his range of jutsu instead of a separate entity.

When they were born - Indra > Ashura
But through hard work and with help of others the power within Ashura developed,thus:
Indra = Ashura :/

Well technically, we don't know how Hashirama died. He may have died by being weakened by Madara or taking Mokuton to its maximum and exhausting his life force. Furthermore, the Suano'o Kyuubi and Mokuton buddha statue pretty much stale-mated each other. Madara also did not possess Rinnegan at the time. As far as Ashura and Indra are concerned, Hagoromo stated they reached equal levels and blew each other up in their final fight, which resulted in their chakras being dispersed and reincarnated.
