A shinobi's prowess won't matter if they're not smart enough to at least keep up their guard around someone that just tried to rip out their eye.

Shisui just let down his guard. It's a canon fact that Danzo ripped out his eye in the manga. It may as well be considered canon. If it were a dragged on fight, that would be worse cause then that would mean that Danzo won fairly and therefore was stronger than Shisui. At least with the way they portrayed it in the anime, it just showed that Shisui was stronger considering Danzo has backup just in case and that it was Shisui's own fault for being a little careless
