I really can't get why people hated those episodes this much. If you just don't label them as fillers for a moment you would be able to see how they contributed to Kakashi's, Yamato's and Itachi's story. Some other characters had also their spotlight which is also worthy of being noted considering that the actual manga lately is all about the protagonists alone.

There's a quite a good possibility that Kishi was involved in the Kakashi ANBU arc. It might have been some scripts that he wrote but couldn't add it into the main storyline because his publishers/editors don't want to slow down the pace of the manga.

Finally we are done with fillers for the year! I was getting so tired of them but now were about back into the climax of naruto! I can't wait, the anime is going to get soooo freaking good soon, can't wait to see the juubi!
