i think the reason why he have to many bodies is to distribute the power of the rinnegan as he himself cant handle it alone. he used the god reaper as a last resort before and it hindered his real capabilities. i think the only reason he can use the rinnegan both left and right eye together is he used those puppets to channel the power giving him lesser exhaustion and thus maintaining the rinnegan.but that is a different story from obito who just took the eye from nagato

I don't think Obito can easily beat Nagato with his Kamui. Even though he can make a surprise attack from underground, Nagato is a good sensor.

The 6 bodies are just puppets, meaning it takes more from him to control all of them simultaneously. Using them didn't reduce the burden but increased it.

And he needed the Gedo Mazou probably because he thought he couldn't fight Hanzo's shinobis with his crippled legs due to Hanzo's explosive tags.

In fact, Edo Nagato can used multiple paths with his single body at the same time fighting Naruto and Killer Bee.
