Its been a while since ive made a thread, but I recently got a response from |KirA| that got me thinking. And with that I decided to go ahead and make a thread on this. Feel free to let me know what you think!
Thesis:
As far as the Sharingan goes in the world of Naruto answers only seem to leave us with more questions. I mean sure it can have 3 tomies, but then EMS? Where does that come from and why do you need to kill someone near to you, Why? And what is the need of this progression. In this thread I will do my best to answer some of these questions by going over the nature of both the Yin and Yang of the Juubi's power.

In this thread I will do my best to answer some of these questions by going over the nature of both the Yin and Yang of the Juubi's power.
Juubi's Power
The Juubi is what is responsible for the Ocular abilities of the Uchiha and all those who possess the Rinnegan. But it also grants physical energy in the form of Yang. And thus we see the split of Yin and Yang, Spirit and body.
We know that the Hyuga worshiped the Juubi (God Tree). And so it stands to reason that their religion would be similar to the beliefs of the Juubi. We also know that there are strong links between the Hyuga and Taoism, which is made popular by the notion of Yin and Yang. And so it is safe to assume that the cornerstone of the Hyuga's belief, Yin and Yang, would be linked to the Juubi and its beliefs.
Now that I have created the foundation of the relevance of Yin and Yang, in relation to the Juubi and his power, I will continue.

Indra
When you examine the Yin you see that it is the self. The inner spirit that stands apart from the world, waiting to be set free of its earthly bonds. The Sharingan is the physical manifestation of the Yin, and so I believe the stronger ones Yin is, the stronger the Sharingan becomes. And thus those who live according to that creed are strengthen by it, and the deeper they go into the fire, the hotter they burn.
Take this for example. Sasuke, Itachi and Madara are the strongest Uchiha to date, but the rest of the Clan seem like fodder in comparison. Itachi took out 3 of the military ninja in movement and he didnt make it look difficult. So then why are these 4 Ninja different? Why are they so strong? You will see the the answer to both questions are one and the same.
Itachi - A genius at birth who thought at the level of the Kage. He had to sit and watch as the clan that he loved attempted to destroy the village that he loved. Unable to stomach the warring he had distanced himself from both the Clan and the Village becoming an outkast and latter on a martyr.
Sasuke - An avenger, losing the clan that he loved at the hands of the brother he loved, now left with nothing he becomes an avenger, sacrificing friendship and emotion in order to gain the power he needs to defeat his brother.
Madara - Losing many of his brothers at a young age, and then his younger brother, and then his clan, Madara is left with literally nothing.
As you may have noticed these characters are all oukasts. They dont rely on others, they cant afford to, whether by circumstance or decision, these characters have been left to themselves to reflect and grow in the midst of there own seclusion. Even when they are part of a group, you notice that they are not really a part of the group, they are in the group as a means to an end.
The Rikudo said that they possessed Indra's Chakra, but I dont think they were born with it, rather I think they gained it by following the Path of Yin, the same path set forth by Indra.
The less they rely on the world, the more they end up relying on themselves and thus the stronger the power of their Yin/Sharingan becomes. The conditions to upgrading your Sharingan arent arbitrary, they are instructions guiding one down the path of Yin.
1 Tomie - Relying on your own power.
2 Tomie - Fighting against a friend?
3 Tomie - Destroying bonds with friends
X MS - Killing a loved one
And so we see that Yin plays a key role in the progression of the Sharingan.

Ashura
When you examine the Yang you see that it represents to Physical World and all that resides in it. This is the opposite of the Path of Yin and so we see that those who rely on the world instead of themselves are rewarded with its power.
Hashirama - Relied on those close to him, to a fault. To the point that he was willing to kill himself, as long as his friend (Madara) would end the fighting between the 2 Clans.
Naruto - Relied on his friends and those close to him and will do whatever he can to protect them.
The key idea here is the notion of selflessness. These part people not concerned with themselves as much as they are concerned with the better picture. And thus walk the Path of Yang. And the Juubi's power within them rewards them accordingly.
Some more notable mentions would be Nagato and Kushina who both displayed great feats when they chose to walk the Path of Yang, putting their own lives on the line in order to protect others.

Juubi
Now at the beginning I said that this is all in line with the Juubi's beliefs. Which seems weird because its hard to find the link between the Juubis sporadic actions and Taoism.. But lets consider the Juubi's actions for a moment.
First it sits alone, apart from the world, it had been worshiped by the Hyuga but did little to stop the warring. Instead it sat doing nothing concerned with only itself. (Yin)
Secondly it has become a Giant Tree, literally part of the world. (Yang)
The Juubi is the perfect example of Taoism, and embodies both the Yin and the Yang to the fullest, in perfect balance.
It isnt until this balance is disturbed that it comes into action.

Conclusion
Those who possess the Juubi's Power via Bloodline can strenghten that power by walking their respective paths, Yin and Yang.
One walks the Path of Yin by becoming engulfed in themselves, relying only on themselves. (Selfish)
One walks the Path of Yang by becoming engulfed in the world, trusting only in the world. (Selfless)
When one who possesses the power of the Juubi walks both of these paths they awaken the Rinnegan. Now although it has not been confirmed, I am going to agree with the assumption that both Uchiha and Senju DNA is needed to do this. Even though we are unsure if Nagato possessed Uchiha DNA.
*Sorry if I didnt provide as many scans as I usually do, I wanted to but I am short on time and the internet is kind of slow. I will add scans to the thread over time if I can.*
