The rinnegan plays a vital role with interacting with the Limbo world. It allows the user to their own personal extent to interact with the Limbo world. Some examples include:

This is Nagato using his rinnegan to return the souls from the Limbo world back to the world of the living.
Nagato acting as a mini soul reaper as he tries to pull out Naruto's soul.
Madara is a special case because he is able to use his "Limbo soul" to attack and since it is undetectable by normal means it looks like he is pushing air.
However Sasuke thanks to his rinnegan is able to see Madara's soul leave his body.
