Lol, that happens to me quite a few times, but you have to be quick, if the convo isn't worth continuing then drop it, it is then say something, it doesn't necessarily have to be related to the previous subject

Ask a lot of questions, and don't be afraid to talk about anything as long as it's appropriate, if the person you're conversing with can't keep up with the convo, then they're just boring.

But then again this is coming from a socially awkward person, so take it with a grain of pepper.

If it is a girl then I usually start fighting(silly fight) over silly things and somehow pull a new topic out of that fight.

If it is a boy then I'll start talking about studies then they'll automatically come up with a new topic as they don't want to discuss about studies.
