So I'm writing what I hope will turn into a novel at the moment, and I was wondering if NB here can help me out with something. Now, I'm writing this on Google Docs and I wanted to know, how pages or words would you guys say is good for a chapter?

30. 30 pages x 10 chapters= 300 pages

I'm working on a novel, as well. On Microsoft Word, I make sure to type, at the very least, 1000 words a chapter, which only comes out to be two full pages or two and a half, depending on how much dialogue there is. On average, a novel's page has 250 words. I prefer to write short chapters. I don't know about you though.

Right now I'm on page 4 and I'm 1678 words in, but I just seem to remember reading books when I was younger that was longer than this, this just doesn't seem long enough for a chapter. I looked this up somewhere, and I saw a forum where the person said they write 5-10,000 words a chapter.

Well it depends on the type of novel and how many chapters you think you will include in the entire story. Most novels have about 20-40 pages per chap. An epic novel can have anywhere from 50-100. In the end its whatever you feel the most and are happiest with. Theres no real rule set in stone imo

Divide the chapters by scenes, like a movie.

After the important parts of one scene end, end the chapter, or leave a cliffhanger and switch to a different perspective.

Chapter length depends on the story. Some of the greatest novels have three page chapters. They are only needed to split up the ideas or scenes and produce a nice flow or rhythm to the story

Wow, man. That's pretty insane IMO. My longest chapter has just over 5,000 words. I feel as if most readers don't want to read a chapter that drags out for too long. Idk about you, but I like to put a book down once I'm done with a chapter, and not in the middle of one because I just couldn't bear to finish the rest of it or just didn't have time to or whatever the case shall be.
Then again, I am just an amateur. I wouldn't take my advice to heart because it just may be flawed. Just go with your gut and what style of writing appeals to you. There are no rules to writing a novel, being that it's YOURS. As long as it's readable and has a good story, I THINK--not know--that's all that matters.

WHOA. Beautifully said. That's precisely what I do, although I wasn't entirely aware of it until now.
