We know there's a huge gap in between when hashirama died and when naruto was born. Madara expanded his lifetime and died almost around the time sasuke was born so it makes since but what was asura chakra doing all that time?

So theoretically it was possible that someone inherited Asura.Madara hints at something that is linked among him and sasuke and I doubt he is just figuring out the indra connection. I think there is something else that drives who is chosen. There surely has been other rivals who embodied the same type of spirits. Like Orochi and Jiraiya. Everyone has been a parallel of a past version.
