He definitely felt like two different characters. When he had the mask, especially the fight right before it shattered he seemed so much more powerful and sinister. With his mask shattered he was exposed to the world unable to hide behind his physical and metaphorical mask. Then there was that whole TnJ mask that Naruto tried to take off, Obito had masks for days I guess.
