But you're forgetting that he wasn't skilled with the Rinnegan as he had recently gotten them. He didn't have training like Nagato and Madara did. They actually practice and trained to understand the abilities and techniques of the eye. He just got the eye. Just like Sasuke. It's like Telling a guy to go pilot the plane when he doesn't know how to. Understand now? The Rinnegan is not pretty straight forward type thing. To perfect the eye to the maximum one needs to understand it first. Like Hagoromo was the only one who was able to master the Rinnegan.
