Madara was MENTIONED before in naruto series but hasn't appeared. Madara appeared after 558 chapters of naruto so 558 chapters passed without Madara Uchiha, in general Madara is not important in naruto series, just after 558 yeah he's important!!

Madara Uchiha is a huge reason as to why Naruto is the kyuubi's jinchuriki actually. Without Madara influencing Obito (or saving him from death for that matter), Obito would never have unleashed the kyuubi on Konoha. Madara may not have been present for most of the series, but he is very important in my opinion.
