I think I missed this when reading the manga..Just how did Gai survive again? Did he exit the 8th gate before he pwned himself, or did Naruto somehow save him and that's how he got his crescent (or is that because of the Hermit?). And if Naruto saved him from the 8th gate, how did he do it/did he get some of his power?

Naruto saved him.

Sage gave him the sun symbol on his hand. He touched Gai's heart or chakra point using the sun and his heart pressure didn't stop meaning Naruto stopped the 8th gate and made Gai live. We don't really know how it works (neither does Naruto haha) but he saved his life....at least temporarily.
