I've theorized for a long time that Sakura was supposed to be descended from Hashirama and would eventually unlock a sakura tree version of mokuton with pollen that afflicts genjutsu, but that Kishimoto decided against it for some reason. The circle also resembles the symbol for Yin, separated from yang with a yang dot in it.
