Why is Gai alive?

He should be dead. We were given flashback and all that stuff.

Flashback was of how he learned the gates and the other was Kakashi admitting Guy bested him. It wasn't about Guy's life, just how far he's come in his abilities.

I said 'WE were given flashbacks'.

Meaning, us the readers were given flashbacks about Gai. Not, 'Gai had a flashback'.

The dude accepted his death, knew the consequences and proceed to use the 8th gate of 'death'.

It's not lame. It highlights exactly one of the recurring themes of the Manga.
The older generation believing in their 'students' and sacrifising themselves and entrusting their wills onto to them 'make the world a better place'.

Naruto saying 'I won't let my friends die' isn't really a good reason for why Gai is alive.

I think Kishimoto is trying to push Naruto's "I can change everything" words and put truth into them. Guy by right should have died but Naruto changed it. It's also a reoccurring theme besides the old dying to make way for the young. Naruto keeps defying life/death.

I doubt Guy will ever be a shinobi again though, so Lee will still take over. Guy sacrificed his youth for the greater good and is now a shell of his former self, leaving the way for Lee to succeed. Same as Tsunade living though she was sliced in two. She could have died and had Sakura live on in her name, but she lived. Kakashi too.

It doesn't necessarily mean that Kishi was hyping his death. Gai and the others believing that he would die a certain death doesn't make it absolute. They didn't know Naruto would come back to save him in time so at the time those chapters came out of course it looked like he was made out to die but now we find that to be untrue. You should stop dwelling on past chapters man.. this wasn't filler unless you believe Gai getting more backstory is filler Lol (which is probably the main purpose of the flashbacks perhaps..)

Guy was never taken seriously, not even in the Rock Lee series. We all saw this crazy man, with weird clothes and hair who did insane exercises and then we see why he did all that. If not for his constant strain on his body and mind he would not have even gotten passed Evening Elephant, even stating it hurt but he was adjusting.

Makes me think he decided to do this so he could try to fight off the 8th gate's death affect, and he's making Lee do the same.

I look at it this way, Naruto said one day he would change everything and he already has started to do that. Guy stated the 8th gate means death but we knew Kishimoto would show it. He managed to not only show it, but use it to show Naruto now does have an ability to change things.

Gaara was dead but with Naruto's help Chiyo brought him back to life.

Naruto is defying facts just like he said he would because his belief is he can make anything happen.

I agree with this completely.

Well i see it like this, last week, everybody was complaining like all hell because Naruto saved gai. This week, i couldn't care less if he did save him because you guys( even some manga reviewers ) did enough complaining( for EVERYONE ) for a full week.
