So Gai VS Madara debate is hot right now.
People say Madara was going hard on Gai, others saying that Madara was toying.
Regardless, Madara went head to head with Gai...and is the one who is still talking to tell the tale.
But people keep saying Gai this Gai that...same people are forgetting that Gai had alot of help.

Kakashi, Rock Lee, Minato and Gaara. Off panel they helped, evident to how tired they all are when it showed them all heaving two chapters ago after the Naruto and Hago talk.

So technically, Madara VS Gai, Rock Lee, Kakashi, Minato, and Gaaara

Madara has taken the beating, yes. Notice how not once was he sweating or out of breath. Yea he was bleeding because he was taking hits, but Madara wasnt tired at all, he wasnt even in any pain. He said "This last one could have went either way." Meaning as for the elephant attack, he knew he could tank it, but wasn't so sure about the Dragon Kick.

But had Madara been serious, use the Rinnigan to halt Gai's movements, Omnyoudon to erase him. Or summon more meteors..buuuut Madara is Arrogant, and he likes to test his limit. His limit was Gai's last attack, no sorry, not even that was his limit seeeing as to how he easily auto healed from it. Again..Madara isnt even straining, he is still at full power. I think if Madara was having a difficuly battle, he would be sweating, and gasping.

I think Madara was being arrogant and using Gai as a source of entertainment, as he blatantly stated.

Gai nearly killed madara...i dont think even madara is so arrogant to just allow sth like that to happen....the surprised look on his face when he gets struck explains it all.with that said he still survived so he is stronger than gai.but in all honesty madara couldnt do shit but barely tank and survive gai's attacks

I think if he really could,he would have done so....the risk of him getting killed was too great to just be toying with gai

I dont think madara's way of looking at enjoyment is getting punched like a punching bag....he was also enjoying in his fight against hashirama...it is a possibility that you are right but IMO it is strongly portrayed in the manga pages that madara was seriius and just couldnt do anything

Madara let guy beat him around because like you said he wants to test his own limits and likes a challenge. Had kakashi, minato, or gaara not been there gai would have died against madara at the very beginning of the fight. Even lee saved him after he used 7th gate.
