Hello! Just thought I'd give some reasoning to why Gai will live.
Perhaps even what Naruto's and Sasuke's true power are that they received from Hagoromo.
The power hagoromo possessed is Yin-Yang release.
Yin release is the power of spirit/life, Yang release is the physical powerful side of Yin and Yang.
Hagoromo was able to use the jutsu "Creation of All Things." With that he was able to use the power of Yin to create phyiscal forms(tailed beasts) and use Yang to breathe life into them.
The power of Yin-Yang release gives the user Rinnegan eyes. Rinnegan is able to use all ninjutsu.
Every jutsu derives from Yin-Yang release.
Rinnegan has been shown to be able to take life and give life.
First I will start with Naruto.
As from this we can see Naruto IS in BSM.
The sage/Hagoromo did not give Naruto the 9 beasts.
So that is out of the question of that being the power the sage gave him.
One thing I believe it could be is an enhanced form of sage mode.
Or even simply he only received Yang release powers from the sage.
While going in to grab the staff, the Yang side is towards Naruto and Yin on Sasuke's side.
Okay now for Sasuke.
I have come to determine because of what I have said and other reasons I'm not entirely sure about.
That Sasuke will not have Rinnegan Reason for that is because you need mastery over Yin-Yang to have the Rinnegan as thats what it is.
In the case of Madara he was able to unlock it because he added Hashiramas Yang release chakra to his own Yin release.
However! Hagoromo chose Sasuke to inherit his power which is arguably Rinnegan. I'm sold at 50/50 shot Sasuke has been given Rinnegan to level up with Narutos 9 beasts and sage mode.
Yin and Yang equal Rinnegan the reason for Hagoromo having it.
By this page it gives me understanding he gave all his power to Sasuke and Naruto. Except divided into two. Yin and Yang. And that the symbols are on the hands of the big guy.
The dear ol end of what my entire point is..
Naruto and Sasuke are shown to have Yang and Yin on their hands respectively.
Naruto's eyes were hidden until the last moments of the chapter. And Sasuke's are still hidden.
Sasuke hasn't shown anything to us thus far.
Naruto walked up to Gai and gave life to him. Thanks to his Yang release.
Sasuke will be shown in the next chapter to give Gai new physical form or body parts. Because of his Yin release.
Therefore Gai will be saved by Naruto and Sasuke together.
Real happiness is not having to suffer death of your friends. Everything happening is because of people having to die unnaturally.
Its possible Madara wanted to eat the fruit and be able to do anything he pleases.
Hagoromo and Kaguya have the same power of Yin-Yang thanks to the tree.
Hagoromo gave Naruto his Yang powers and gave Sasuke his Yin powers. Also giving Sasuke his Rinnegan to level the new BSM Naruto(Not concrete)

= Real happiness.
Its why the sage is so peaceful and understanding.
