My bad but it wasn't his EXACT words but the death of the two fighting each other was implied the moment it was said that they were equals.

No matter how you look at it equals always cancel each other out hence why Naruto said that if he and Sasuke fight they will both die. Equals fighting doesn't always mean death but a draw is possible.
