I agree, Obito was a lame choice. It makes it clear that the Kakashi Gaiden's only real purpose was to introduce Obito as a character so we would give some kind of a shit once he was revealed as Tobi. But he was still such a largely unimportant and underdeveloped character overall that it might as well have been Izuna, another person we knew next to nothing about at the time.

I'm none to crazy over Tobi's identity as Obito. I think it was just a tad bit too obvious, and that there really wasn't proper forshadowing for him. I think he should have been a character that appeared more than once before the Pain arc. I liked the idea of it being Danzo, but there are too many holes in that for the logic to work out. I was pulling for it to somehow be Izuna Uchiha. I think it would have made for a fantastic parallel to Sasuke (and we all know how much Kishi loves to double and triple character patterns), and it would have been a much better character moment for both him and Naruto. I also think it would have perfectly set up a Naruto vs. Sasuke battle that was intense and emotional.

Agree? Disagree? Like Obito? Why? Like someone else? Why?

He should've been a future version of Naruto, obviously.

But seriously, who else could he have been, why Izuna of all people? We barely know anything about him, and the only character he would have any emotional weight on is literally the main villain, Obito was the best choice.

He didn't start using his Kamui swirl until much later than he was intorduced, though. Even after his initial encounter with Kakashi, where he showed no inclination toward him. It came too late.

The only reason people brought in Izuna was Tobi's knowledge about Madara and his past. There was never any specific hint it could be Izuna.

People simply didn't picture Tobi working together with a person fom the past who told him all these things...

Obito was the best choice in my opinion.

It could have just been Madara from the start, we would've been left with a standard villain setup and we wouldn't have had the amazing character that is now Obito. (Though kid Obito is still legit) It worked great as is, wouldn't change it for anyone else.
