Is there any hope?

Okay I'm trying to get my friend hooked into anime, in general. He's the type of person who says "animes are for retards" but he agreed to my request that he would watch any anime (of any genre) as long as it gets him jumping out of his seat. So I start giving him some recommendations and the first one I suggested was Death Note. I told him that watching the first episode of DN will get him wanting for more. And so he watched it... and the result? A bloody rating of 3/10. Wtf? For me, it was at least an 8/10. Idk if there's something wrong with his taste or something but he said there was no suspense and drama to it. Perhaps I ruined it a bit because I told him what the plot is about (didn't reveal the major spoilers and stuff; just gave him a brief explanation to how the supernatural note book DN works)... but I still can't believe he disliked it that much. I mean, he said it wasn't that terrible - it was just average. I did overrate it a little... Perhaps, he expected more :|

I told him to watch one more episode of DN because that's when the plot starts driving forward (with the cat and mouse game) but he said it's all over. He's not going to watch anymore episodes of DN. I mean, who the hell judges an anime entirely on one episode. So what is happening now is that I'm trying to get him hooked into another anime. I'm thinking about AoT but the first few episodes are slow in pace - he won't like it. The same story applies to Naruto. I really want him to get hooked into Naruto but that seems like it's never going to happen. So what should I do?

He's the type of person who likes watching tv drama shows instead of cartoons and animes. His favourite tv series is Breaking Bad and he absolutely adores it.

EDIT: He has watched some episodes of Naruto and OP that was airing on TV when he was young but said it was "meh". However, he did enjoy watching DBZ, saying it was "great" (although I'm not sure how many DBZ episodes has he watched).

You can't force someone to like something if it's simply not for them. If you want to make a last ditch effort, show him a great Naruto fight on Youtube and see if that makes a difference.

That's how I got into Bleach, after all.

Just give him naruto. If there is any anime that can make his type get hooked then it's naruto. Believe it. I too am a one episode decider myself,gave naruto 7/10 and thought of continuing it and now it's 10/10. Trust me,do it and then reply,and if it doesn't work then there is literally no hope. And don't spoil anything.

All in all I loved the death note series, but looking back, I thought the first ep was a bit ehhhh...
If he tries any others, think more along the lines of deadman wonderland, Darker than black, or Elfen lied. They're much more instantly active!

What's even the point in trying to impose anime to someone who doesn't like it? Anime is just a type of art, quite like books, movies, songs etc. If he doesn't like it in general, why do you force him?

AMVs are risky, I couldn't stand them for a long time but whatever you decide, pick a very entertaining one that doesn't have too much impact on the main storyline.

Also, did you tell him to watch subbed or dubbed, cause that could be a factor, too, however small?

I'm not pressuring him to watch it. He personally said that he wanted to watch one anime that would get him all excited. He wants to know what the fuss is about with anime these days, considering that a lot of people he knows of in uni talk quite a bit about their favourite anime series. He just wants to know why everyone watches it.

I told him to watch the subbed version of DN. I don't think he cares at all about the voices (he just wants a thrilling series with an amazing plot) even though I heard that the dubbed version is better.

well if he says anime is for retards but he likes DBZ than there's nothing you can do, he is outright determined not to give it a decent try, I had a friend like that too before I moved

tell him to read phoenix and if he rates it lower than a 5/10 than he's not trying even a little bit, I can understand how something like Naruto or OP isn't for everyone like LoTR isn't for everyone because of teh genre but Phoenix imo should appeal to everyone

Some people just don't like animes or mangas. I would stop trying to force him into that. If you try too hard, he maybe just will block and say to all animes 'mehh...it's bad'. The fact he liked DBZ says nothing. I know many people who liked it, but don't watch any other animes.

But if he is okay with that and wants you to show him some more animes/mangas, you could first ask what kind of anime he would like to see. Let him choose...and then watch it with him, even if you don't know that anime well. I was thinking of an anime like Breaking Bad, but it's hard to find something as good as BB. It would also be helpful to know, how old he is. Maybe try animes with sports...
