Another GodDamned Retcon

I decided to take a few days to really let this new plot simmer before I jumped down it's throat, but waiting has only made me hate it more.

Let me list just some of the problems.

1) It removes what little mystery surrounded the Sage of Six Paths was left.

2) It's out of nowhere, and just a poor attempt to explain how much Kishi likes doubling and tripling and quadupling character motifs.

3) Poorly foreshadowed, too out there to make sense

4) Once again redefines the universe in a way that makes it a completely different story from where it started. Remember when Water Dragon Jutsu was threatening?

1 is dumb. We were going to learn about the Sage sooner or later. Why leave it a mystery? Would it really make the story any better? Me thinks it wouldn't. Not to mention we don't know everything about him like who his brother is or where his mother is from.

just standing for 5 seconds is also a difficult task for a baby, but that doesn't mean he's destined to stand for his lifetime after growing up.
Same goes for the manga and the characters.

At 4., you know full well that the Narutoverse is not all ninjas, those are only five nations out of many around the world. Kishi's story focused only in a small part of that planet and has started to open it just a little bit to give the readers a sense that its something bigger than just Ninjas. By focusing on only a part of that planet it gave Kishi leeway and flexibility to expand the story. Not to mention that part one was from the perspective of young children who think that the shinobi world is enormous when it really isn't.

I disagree. The mystery about the Sage was the most compelling thing about him, and one of the only compelling things left thematically in the story. They really ****ed him in the ass when he started talking like the hip kids, too.

And not exactly. Not everything in a story should be explained. Exposition get boring, especially when it's bad.

But there is a clear difference between developing plot and character and radically changing the logic of the universe.

Stories are gonna change man. Honestly most Shonen have some sort of dynamic change towards the end of the series that completely redefines what we thought we knew. Naruto is no exception.

And I agree that expanding the universe can be a good thing, but this was so sloppy. It's retcon and almost pure exposition with not prior basis for it. It comes out of nowhere and because of that it doesn't make sense with the pre-established logic of the universe. I feel that the current thought process that Kishi is going with is that the best things are the biggest. The biggest justus, and the biggest fights, and the biggest changes. But big isn't always good. This revelation that Sasuke and Naruto were always meant to fight sucks out any humanity from their relationship that it had retained up till this point.

It's a trend that mars the genre and is usually done to artificailly extend the show. I honestly thought that Naruto was going to be different up until the World War arc.

I agree. It had that plot in spades! There were years of plot buildup to this point. Though to be fair, it seems that that's all gone out the window with this World War bullshit. Kishi ran out of plot after the Pain arc, which is what everything seemed to be building to, and he retconed the show to artificially extend it. It's all about the $$. Can't blame him, though. He was writing brilliant characters but people cared more about their flashy fire attacks.

Not everything in a story should be explained, sure, I agree with that. We don't need to know who Lee's parents are, Mei's backstory, who all the Kage's in history were, small shit like that.

But the Sage's backstory? That was essential to the manga's plot and leaving it unexplained would present way more retcons than you claim there are right now
