Neji is the only non-main-house member who knows the Hyuuga's most powerful attack. Only main house is taught Hakke Rokujūyon Shō, but he figured it out on his own, so it definitely raises him above any member of branch. He could take on a bunch of them.

For the uchiha, not all of them have the sharingan. All hyuuga have the byakugan. So no matter how geniusy neji is, he can't content with the numbers. If the branch family all rise in revolt against the main house, then curse seal time. So without extreme outside help, it is impossible because with it, it is still a sucidal mission.
