Looking back at the Itachi vs Sasuke battle, i noticed that when Itachi was talking to Sasuke about attaining the Eternal Mangekyo, we are shown an image of some sort of a figure with 2 sets of sharingan. This figure also has horns and from looking at it, it seems to have the same marking in the center of the forehead as Hagomoro. It's very possible he did meet SoSP. If nothing else it would provide an explanation as to how he got those spiritual weapons.
MIND BLOWING FACT: It's been implied Itachi was on a secret mission of the sage to unite indra and his brother again and find the reincarnatons. The Sage gave Itachi his disease and gave him 15 years (he met him at 5) to find the reincarnations or else he would die.
