It's either he knows how to use those techniques without the gates or he has opened the 8th gates before and used them

I doubt that he used the 8th gate before. I mean it was stated for how many times now that ''once the user opened the 8th gate, that user will die''. Maybe guy practiced it's movements but it requires the 8th gate to use activate it.

Guy probally used those attacks in a blow eight gate,and saw that they didn't work.
He didn't have enough power.

You are right about the fact that Gai, Lee, and possibly others talk about the 8th Gate techniques as if Gai has used them before, but it is impossible to practice the moves in 8th Gate, because it mixes the users chakra system with their circulatory system and burns up the users blood for strength.

Gai never watched his father use the 8th Gate. His father gave his life so that he could run to safety. We know that Gai's father did not kill all of the Mist's Seven Swordmen, so if Gai just sat there and watched they would have killed him after his father died.
