I'm fairly certain that Madara never knew that he even existed.

Obito feared him, but Obito also has been bested by some pretty pathetic attacks in the past. He got "killed" by some unnamed fodder ninja, lost an arm to Minato, lost and arm to Torune, and almost was blown up by a bunch of paper bombs.

Other than the Madara part, I agree that Itachi's feats are rather impressive, and put him pretty high in terms of historical importance in the series.

The databook compares characters in their base mode and Itachi has a higher score than Jiraiya in everything bar strength and stamina. That and Kisame was with him at that moment. Jiraiya would have lost had Itachi actually had the intent to fight and not been there only so Danzo would hear of his presence.

But that's not to say that I don't think Jiraiya could beat Itachi. It could go either way and depends on alot of factors. Just at that moment w/ Kisame there too, it wouldn't have been good for him.
