I've been thinking about the mysterious brother of Hagoromo. Obviously he wasn't introduced to us when the manga is close to it's end for no reason. What do we really know about him? Not much, the sole fact that he helped Hagoromo to defeat Juubi in the past. But let's think about him a bit. Since he did, in fact, help Hagoromo, I think it's safe to assume that he more-less followed Ninshuu ideals. But for some unknown reason we know very little about him. The reasons may be different:

1. He was not talented or significant - I don't think so, he fought the Juubi after all.
2. He turned to be evil and fought Hagoromo in the end - might be possible, but this would mean that the whole Ashura vs Indra started with Hagoromo and his brother, which is not like that as far as we know.
3. He had died for some unknown reasons, probably sacrificed himself to defeat Juubi - for me it seems to be the most possible explainiation: he was indeed strong and helped Hagoromo, but all the data about him ceased to exist because Hagoromo was the only one who made it out of the fight with Juubi alive, hence taking all the glory.

But then comes the question: what's his meaning for the plot? I don't like to think he has been introduced "just because". I think there is a clear parallel between Ootsutsuki brothers and Ashura & Indra.
As we all know, Hagoromo originaly wanted them to be sided, maintaining peace in the world through Ninshuu. We also know that Indra has choosen his own way, which was the start of the long war.

And then we have the prophecy. Naruto and Sasuke are obviously going to break this reincarnation chain and end this war, coming to some kind of agreement. When they do so, they will be able to lead the world away from Ninjutsu, maintaining peace just in the same way Hagoromo and his brother did.

Yes, I know that Sasuke and Naruto are Indra and Ashura's incarnations. But then, if you look at this, SO6P, the saviour - they are just titles.
I think that in the end Naruto and Sasuke will become the second coming of Hagoromo and his brother, who will fix all the mistakes and lead the shinobi world to peace.

Sounds about right. Would be awkward if the manga turned out completely different from this, that would be a fail. But if does go along the lines of this theory or somehow similar that would be great.

Indeed. I can't think of any other reason why Hagoromo's brother appeared.

@Interpid

I'm glad you agree :)
