It does not seem to be relevant to the plot.

She would have been the same with or without it.

Might it be so the neglected Hyuga can get some credit?

It's not relevant to the plot other than telling us the byakugan's origins and that its actually important enough to reveal it's origins.

It's the only way to connect the Byakugan to the Three Doujutsu. Not necessarily connect the Hyuuga to the strong bloodline of Rikudou but the byakugan..

One can still see it as fan service but may I say a relevant one.
Kaguya having Byakugan would explain how and why she came to eat the fruit. Because it is made of chakra and she saw it.

from part 1 kishi talked big about the byakugan. kishi doesn't forget. he threw that in there to validate his previous statements in part 1. remember the old monk and shukaku kishi spoke about in part 1? do you also remember how he didnt forget to elaborate on that statement 300 plus chapters later?

Well you can also call it closing plot holes. Kakashi in part one state that the Byakugan and the Sharingan have some sort of connection.
Right now it seems like the Byakugan was the inborn ability of Kaguya, she got the third eye (Rinnegan/Sharingan crossover) through eating the fruit and the "original" Byakugan was transformed into what it is now.
Furthermore this gives more evidence towards the theories that the Sage's brother is the direct ancestor of the Hyuuga (and possible Uzumaki) Clan(s).

The way I see it, it was just to connect the two doujutsu with a similar origin. That way, the Byakugan didn't just randomly develop over time, but developed alongside the Sharingan. It makes more sense to have the Doujutsu tie together that way.

How did she see the chakra to obtain it if she first needed chakra to use ocular jutsu? She got the chakra from eating the fruit.

Inborn? So Byakugan does not need chakra?

Kaguya had the Byakugan (likely even before she ate the fruit), so the Hyuuga must be directly related to her. We only know of two sons, Hagomoro gave birth to the Founding Fathers of Senju and Uchiha. Conclusion: the Hyuuga and possible the Uzumaki come from his brother.

If you want to know about Kaguya's origins and why she had the Byakugan, well she doesn't look really "human" so my guess is she is either demon, a goddess or another species. So the "original" Byakugan maybe was an inherent ability of her race. As she ate the fruit it delevoped into the Byakugan we know now.

@TheRapGuy:
There is a difference between the Byakugan she had before and after eating the fruit, the "new" Byakugan needs chakra the first one likely not. The abilities before maybe were not as developed or strong and were enhanced from having chakra.

Where was it said that there were two Byakugans or that it was affected by the fruit? Either I missed it or you assumed it was like this.

I doubt it, possibly having the sharingan and the byakugan allowed her to see everything. Pretty sure the byakugan has potential.

That was just an assumption based of:
She has two Byakugan eyes(her normal ones).
She had no chakra before eating the fruit.
Only the Sharingan and Rinnegan seem to be connected to the Shinju/Jubi.

It also closes a (big) plot hole about how somebody from a far away land/dimension/planet knows that eating the fruit will give her a power up. If she had something that was akin to the Byakugan we know now, she saw the potential the fruit had.

And finally once she got infused with chakra her original abilities were also changed/enhanced so I would assume her former Byakugan would evolve into what we know now.

No, logical. The Byakugan had to have come from somewhere. Not giving it an explanation would have been stupid.

Kakashi called it back in the Chunin Exams in Part I.

As for the Uzumaki - did I miss something? where is it said that they came from Hagoromo's brother? Wouldn't it make more sense for the Uzumaki to be decended to from Ashura?
