Naruto saved the village from Pein single handedly. He did something even the elite jonin of the village like Kaskashi (a Kage prospect) and the current Hokage failed to do. Yet he's still a genin? Are the chunin exams more challenging than real world application of skills? In the miliary there are such things as battlefield promotions. I think Naruto should've at least been promoted to chunin for valor and defending the village as the last man standing who could.

At this point the chunin exams are just a formality and don't really access or gauge the full potential of a person's skills. Sasuke is another example.

What do you think. Should ninja be awarded battlefield promotions? Not just for extreme cases like Naruto vs Pein, but other incredible difficult missions where espionage, tactics, skill and critical thinking are essential.

It's not all about strength. It's about intelligence, ability to carry out missions efficiently, etc.

But he's gonna go from Genin to Hokage so ranks don't even matter tbh.

Kishimoto might of just kept him a genin since Sasuke is still a genin. But, I agree he should of gotten a promotion for saving the village.

He didn't save the village, It clearly is still destroyed. Plus it wasn't by himself, he had help from Jman and the village info, plus the fact Deva wasted his power on the village before he could rape naruto at full power with all 6 paths.

Well the Leaf village is being rebuilt, and all of Pein's victims were revived due to Naruto's conversation with Nagato after the fight.

We can say Naruto saved the villagers from potentially being murdered by the 6 paths. Assuming Nagato directed the 6 Paths to scour through the wreckage of the village after the massive to find the survivors.

Naruto was the one who destroyed/incapacitated every single body Nagato was controlling. Chunin like Izumo and Kotesu were helpless, dead or dying. Shikamaru's intelligence didn't contribute to Pein's defeat or the revival of the dead villagers. Naruto was the only one left (since Tsunade and Kakashi were incapacitated) who could go the distance and take the punches.

Chunin are picked due to analytical and leadership skills. While jonin are appointed to do ability of the ninja. Ceremoniously granting Naruto an advance in rank for his contributions shouldn't be off the table. Genin is a commissioned rank in a sense. SM Naruto is easily jonin rank, and his battle with such a bizarre and powerful opponent should merit a promotion.

If that was the case he would have been jonin right after the chunnin exams.

He fought the one tail and garaa single handedly.

Realistically, Naruto should have been a jounin after he defeated Gaara. Kakashi was a jounin at 12, and he didn't have shit for leadership skills at that time. Sasuke, Neji, and Shino should have been made chuunin after the exams as well, not just Shikamaru.

Naruto after Pain's invasion should have been made Hokage with Tsunade out. He had the power, mindset, knew what it means to defend people and places you love, felt true pain, and treasured everybody. The ideal package. But he and Sasuke are probably staying genin for a reason. There'll be a big celebration when the war because it'll be so unheard of for genin to be that strong.

^ This to the above. Naruto, Sasuke, Shino and Neji all displayed abilities worthy of being promoted. Unlike Shikamaru, they don't rely on others for their own shortcomings in terms of physical dexterity. But the examiners were just bias that year i suppose.

Naruto making Hokage after defeating Pein would still be a stretch IMO. He's has all the traits but not the experience to lead a whole village and protect it. Kakashi should've been Hokage and Naruto apart of his entourage. Stewarding Naruto for the job and refining his skills. Promote Naruto to Jonin and star giving him A and S rank missions. After a few year, Naruto would be ready for the mantle of Hokage.

It's all part of the "screw you" that Naruto's life was meant to be. That omake where Konohamaru beats Naruto in the chuunin exams and gets promoted makes me die on the inside. Sometimes comic relief in Naruto's expense is just sad.

Yeah that thing is terrible. Good thing it's fanon rather than canon.

Naruto didn't defeat Pain single-handedly.

Naruto has the skills and achievements but his emotional maturity is that of a toddler so no promotions for him yet.

Never mind that Naruto was able to make a philosophical and emotional retort to a Nagato's jaded, pessimistic and apathetic view of the world. Naruto acts a fool but he has maturity when it counts. He restrained himself from his personal desire of killing Nagato in person when he saw him and instead opted to open a dialogue with him.

The complete opposite of Sasuke. Who goes an mad tirades and lashes out at any and all ninja he feels have aggrieved him; Danzo, the leaf villagers who had nothing to do with the Uchiha Massacre, the other Kage at the summit.

I'm sure his moments of awesome accounts for something but his general daily behavior is more important. He is brash and disrespectful. Kiba has better manners than him.

Attitude isn't a category for chunin. The exams basically test the abilities of a genin. Since first year genin (age 12) qualify to take the exam, a 16 year old Naruto (trained by Kakashi and Jiraya) should have no trouble soloing the exam. Sakura was able to pass on her own just fine. As was loud Kiba, shy Hinata, and barely there Shino.

It is in fact one of the most vital category for promoting genins to higher ranks. As chunin, they are expected to lead missions. Considering his attitude is what makes him a leeroy jenkins, he has no chance whatsoever to pass as a chunin. But as YV said, he's gonna be hokage anyway so why bother? Genin>hokage is cooler than chunin>hokage and he's got Sakura to whip him into good behavior and Shikamaru as his secondary brain.
