Last chapters revealed interesting things about the knowledge created by Hagoromo Ootsutsuki.
He created Ninshuu, the manipulation of Spiritual Energy to enstablish communication links.
...if Ninjutsu didn't exist before the creation of Ninshuu, and Ashura/Indra were using Ninjutsu (I suppose that they used it in a primitive form), how is that RDS was created?
It is very clear that Kaguya Ootsutsuki has some relationship with the priestess of the RDS... it's her, or some avatar of her psyche.
Chapter 670 already told that even after the war between Ashura/Indra ended with their bodies destroyed, their spirits were wandering out there. I think the same thing happened with Kaguya, and she became the RDS (I guess Sir Derp Obito has the credit for this, he was very accurate when explaining the concepts behind the Hannya Mask).
Based on this opened window, I feel like we could predict the mechanics behind the RDS technique, which I think is not ninjutsu, but Ninshuu.
RDS doesn't use chakra per se, it uses "spiritual energy". Minato could use this powerful technique when he did not have chakra left (he was almost empty), and he wanted to save Konohagakure and Naruto.
But, if he used his little reserve of chakra to create the seal for the Kyuubi inside Naruto, where did he get enough spiritual energy to seal the other half?
RDS sacrifices the user "soul" to trap the target's soul. I feel like Minato used RDS using his own soul instead of his mind's spiritual energy to trap the Yin half of Kurama (which is mostly spiritual energy).
But, as this kind of technique doesn't need chakra molding (mixing spiritual and physical energy to create chakra), this technique should be in the category of Ninshuu.
Hiruzen was under the same situation when he fought Orochimaru. The years were costing him chakra reserves, and henceforth he decided to use this technique to take Orochimaru with him. How could this technique be so powerful...? It was his own spirit.
Conclusion: Reaper Death Seal is a Ninshuu application.
