I don't remember Sasuke or Itachi coming up with ideas on how to bring peace. Itachi only did things for Konoha, while Sasuke right now is following his own ambitions, ignoring other people's needs.

Genius or not, the eldest son's path only leads to destruction, not peace. If Madara was the successor, he shouldn't be leading a war, he should prevent it.

Blame the eldest son who kept creating problems for the younger son. If the eldest son didn't start the feud, they would've achieved peace by now. It's the eldest son's fault, not the sage or the younger son. As you have seen, the youngest son had many followers, but the eldest kept getting in the way.

sage felt sorry for the fodder, and because the fodder was like everybody else he found a way to fit in with everybody. So rokudo felt perhaps he can bring peace. The elder was like the sage gifted and couldnt understand the fodder and didnt need there help either so the sage overlooked him.
Also the sages younger son needed a biujimode to stand in front of the older son And I thing its all the biujis sealed in 1 host mode to stand in front of the Older son and his susanoo.
