For some reason I laughed at this.
It would be interesting for the Byakugan to get some backstory or recognition. I want to know how it originated or became what it is today and also who awakened it. Other than that the Byakugan is pretty useless and should not be expected to so anything else throughout the story.
I don't think it's useless. More that in Part 2/Shipuuden, Hyuga characters have been given nothing to do to showcase their abilities.
Think about Neji for instance. Prodigy of the Hyuga clan, rank of Jonin at 15. Now think about Guy. With all the abilities Guy has demonstrated, are any of those outside of the scope for Neji to learn? No
Guy's Morning Peacock requires speed and power and delivers a barrage of fiery punches. Neji is capable of this kind of speed with his 64 palm strike. Neji could learn the gates if he wanted (Lee could with work). Imagine a Morning Peacock combined with the gentle fist chakra attack to the system
Guy's Daytime Tiger is a super fast punch of condensed air pressure. Pure taijutsu. Is that so different from the Hyuga clan's Vaccum palm? Guy executes his with 7 gates open. So there is a lot of force behind his move. Neji performs something similar with no gates. If the gates and the gentle fist were included (the byakugan used to precisely aim the attack); you potentially have an attack that will wreck to opponent externally (like Kisame was) and internally.
This is all speculation of course, but in the realm of fiction it's not impossible for Kishimoto to have come up with something like this. Hell he gave the Uchiha and impregnable shield that doesn't even require eyes to activate (Madara using Susanno with no eyes).
Also the Hyuga are capable of ninjutsu they just prefer taijutsu. Maybe Kishi could make them all wind style. Similar to how the entire Uchiha clan was fire style.
