Hagoromo's Brother or Kaguya Ōtsutsuki

Which do you think was the progenitor of the byukugan?

The Sage of the 6 Paths, Hagoromo possessed the Rinnegan. Hagoromo's first son is the progenitor of the sharingan.

A long time ago back in part one of the manga, it was theorized that the byukugan and sharingan might be related. Could that relation be first cousins? Indra (Uchiha clan) and presumably the heir of Hagoromo's brother's heir (Hyuga clan)?

Or is Kaguya the progenitor of the byuakugan?

If the Uchiha and Hyuga are distant cousins of one another I'd accept that. There are only 3 dojutsu in the Narutoverse. They have to be related somehow.

The addition of the So6p's brother I felt was superfluous. Kishi could've had the sage be an only child. He must have plans to the other brother who also hosted for the ten tails.

It doesn't look like a byakugan as the byakugan is circular, Her eyes look fully white. This could mean that her eyes are not a byakugan or it's another form of it.

Personally I think Indra had multiple children that inherited the Sharingan. But one of his children was born with a mutation of the Sharingan (Byakugan). And they ended up having children of their own.

I distinctly remember someone say that the Byakugan is a mutation or branch off from the Sharingan. And since the Hyuga family is quite large at this point, the mutation would have had to have happened very early on. This is why I think it was one of Indra's children or at least a very early Uchiha. And it couldn't be Hagoromo's brother either because there is no proven Sharingan in that line.

Update: So... I did some more research and it seems like it did come from Kaguya. At least from what I can make of this page:

The order should be Rinnegan - Byukugan = Sharingan

Looking at the Juubi

We can see the eye pattern is a combination of the rinnegan and the sharingan. Hagormo/Sot6p sealed half of the Juubi inside himself. The sage has the rinnegan and his son has the sharingan. The sage's brother has the other half of the juubi sealed inside him. It's possible taking the Juubi as a host, created the dojutsu we see in the Narutoverse. Since the Kaguya has blank eyes. Or Kaguya possessed the byakugan and it evolved into the rinnegan and later the sharingan.

We need chapter 671 damn it!
