Rasangan doesn't explode. It's basically Spatial Formation of Spinning Chakra. The Chakra spins at high speed, and once it makes contact it rotates and drills into the target.

The rasengan can be maintained to drill through defenses and then it can either slow down or the chakra on the inside of the rasengan can increase making it too much for the outside used to maintain it to handle making it blow up.
If someone isn't skilled enough to contain the energy then it can just blow up like when naruto practiced on trees and stuff.
