Minato gave him task of throwing kunai and the result was throwing a kunai, even he opened gates beforehand they give him the boost. He opened the highest level of gates he can achieve from get go not to hold back.

Anyway why No one is answering the question in OP XD?

Regular kunais? They are slower than Lee since part 1.

Kunais aren't something Lee and Gai use in taijutsu and for good reason. They'd break if used.
