Yata no Kagami and Totsuka no Tsurugi consist [only] of spiritual energy and not chakra. They are not Ninjutsu on this view and therefore it isn't possible to absorb them.

I agree....not only that, but I believe Kabuto had his Edo beings in a state where they automatically react to the oppositions attack. Not too sure on it, but I believe the third Raikage mentions this...or maybe the Mizukage? Anywho...that means that Nagato with his arsenal had no way of reacting to the Totsuka. Totsuka and Yata Mirror are not Ninjutsu there spiritual weapons so they cannot be absorbed...

Neither Yata nor Totsuka have physical forms, Thus Both of them are given physical via chakra.

If their physical form is based purely on chakra they can and will get absorbed.

If that is what he was trying to imply, then I really don't see the difference unless he locks up the persons personality and turn them into killing machines.

Even when being "partially" and "completely controlled," the edo tensei shows that they can still used their ability.

Like when Nagato was able to locate where bee and nruto would be after he shrina tensei them in two different directions.
