I made this to show some influences from mythology in Naruto. If you already knew this all then great, otherwise enjoy. It includes history and parallels.

Japanese Mythology 101:
The earliest deities that came into existence were collectively known as Kotoamatsukami.
Uchiha Shisui’s jutsu is named after this and its power as one of the greatest genjutsu in existence.

There were seven generations of gods known as the Kamiyonanayo, with the two deities Izanagi (supreme male) and Izanami (supreme female) being the last of the seven generations.
They were given a Naginata called Ame-no-nuboko which they used to create the Islands of Japan.

Similarly, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki used the Sword of Nunoboku to create the Naruto world and shape the land.

Izanagi and Izanami eventually fell in love and mated, with producing Ebisu as one of their childs.
Ebisu is the guardian of the health of small children [fisherman too], and is a god of fortune.

The much forgotten Ebisu sensei is named from him and exemplifies that similar guardianship of children trait with his relation with Konohamaru (and Udon & Moegi). Ebisu’s will to help carry on the will of fire to the next generation very well resembles the god Ebisu.

Izanami eventually gave birth to the fire god, Kagutsuchi, but died from his flames in the process. Izanagi eventually killed Kagutsuchi with the Totsuka blade (will address later). [Tots
Sasuke Uchiha has a technique influenced from this named Enton: Kagutsuchi which stem from the hot flames of Amaterasu.

Izanagi mourned for his wife Izanami and went into the underworld Yomi to find her. He eventually did, but she had become one of the dead now looking like a horrid corpse. Izanagi escaped Yomi but Izanami cursed him with saying she would kill 1000 people everyday with Izanagi saying 1500 would be born everyday.

Subsequently, Izanagi and Izanami are also Uchiha ocular jutsus. In this case, Izanagi made the Uchiha spammers arrogant while Izanami allowed them to see their true self, very opposite to the legend. Izanami would save the Izanagi users.

Once out of Yomi, Izanagi went to purify himself. From this, three gods were born.
  1. Amaterasu (goddess of sun) born when he washed his left eye.
  2. Tsukuyomi (moon god) born when he washed his right eye.
  3. Susanoo (god of sea and storms) born when he washed his nose.

  • Amaterasu controlled the sun, day, and light of the world.
  • Tsukuyomi controlled the night, moon, and darkness of the world.
  • Susanoo controlled the storms of seas.

These gods are the names for the three Mangekyō Sharingan techniques.
Opposite of Izanami, Itachi used Amaterasu from his right eye and Tsukuyomi from his left eye.
Amaterasu represents the Yang of the world while Tsukuyomi represents the Yin.
Interestingly, Sasuke uses Amaterasu from his left eye compared to Itachi.

The god Susanoo is more interesting though. Susanoo eventually goes on a journey and learns that the eight headed dragon Yamata no Orochi
plans on devouring Kushinada-Hime, the last daughter of an elderly couple who lost the other 7 to Orochi.
Susanoo vows to rescue her if he can marry her afterwards (Itachi x Kushina?).
Susanoo used the legendary Totsuka blade to cut off the heads of Orochi, and finds the Kusanagi blade from the fourth head severed.

Afterwards, the Kusanagi blade would become apart of the trio of sacred weapons along with the “Yata no Kagami” and “Yasakani no Magatama.”

Direct usage of this stuff here when Itachi faces Orochimaru. Orochimaru’s strongest jutsu is the 8 headed Hydra and he wields the Kusanagi. On the other hand Itachi’s used Susanoo with his Totsuka x Yata combo and sealed him.

Itachi’s strongest longe range move in Susanoo is also Yasaka Magatama.

Most of these are explicitly stated on the wiki trivia section. Good job though.

The story of Izanami’s death and Izanagi retrieval to her were also used in the Uchiha Bros. vs. Kabuto fight—Itachi represents Izanami, and literally forces Kabuto (Izanagi) to accept reality instead of attempting to change it.

Also, Sasori’s “Red Sand” moniker could actually be Masashi’s attempt at alluring to the fact that there was river nearby that turned red after Susano’o botched Orochi—this fragment of the story may have actually been where Masashi had the conception of Sasori from, who ironically is teamed up with Orochimaru during Orochimaru’s time in Akatsuki; though obviously if Masashi did use it, he changed the "river" portion to "sand."

But yeah—it's all been said before, good job anyhow.

I knew a couple of these facts but it was a little shady in my mind. Great read, thanks for the knowledge. I love how kishimoto incorporates actual stories into it. I also knew of the story of the three Sannin and how that was an ancient story as well.

Great read bro even tho I read about the snake and susano.
Thanks man, I also thinks Kishi incorporates other mythologies/religions too but I would have to research that more.

Okay, here is the Sannin thing.
The sannin are inspired from the Japanese folk tale: The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya.
In the tale, Jiraiya is a ninja that can morph into an enormous toad to fight his enemies.
Jiraiya falls in love with Tsunade, a woman who mastered using slug magic.
Tsunade lives and leads the area & clan of Kyushu.
(Kyushu's environment is home to many species and particularly extremophiles, that can survive in very harsh conditions.)
His nemesis become the serpent magic user Orochirmaru, who he defeats with his toad abilities.

Nice. Great read, but you forgot about how Hiruzen is based off the Sun Wukong (Monkey King)

Sun Wukong.... Of course there can be only ONE monkey king. Sen'en no Ō - Seiten Taisei - Son Gokū

I am the Handsome Monkey King of the Water Screen Cave; the King of the Sage Monkeys, bestowed with the Dharma name of Son by the Sage of the Six Paths. I am Son Gokū, the Great Sage Equalling Heaven!

Yes indeed. Son Goku himself was also inspired from the Oozaru/Great Ape from Dragon Ball. The Bijuu (Son Goku) and its Jinchuriki (Roshi) have their names straight from 2 main characters of Dragon ball. Kishi himself has stated to be a big fan of Dragon Ball.
