I actually started thinking about how Guy could have lost his wife and (newborn/unborn) kid or something like that but I guess that's too dark even by Naruto standards.

I guess it boils down to Guy observing Lee and thinking "Oh, this kid is just like me when I was younger", then deciding to train him. Still, what a coincidence. Maybe having large eyebrows messes up your chakra-molding abilities?

Mass of their eyebrows shift their center of gravity 10 cm upwards, that's what messes up with their chakra molding.

It makes it even weirder that Lee isn't related to them. Come on, who are Lee's parents? Didn't they influence him at all? I mean, it's understandable that Guy would "model" himself after his father who actually heroically sacrificed himself, but Lee mimicking Guy so much seems off in comparison.
