And what would be the reason of faking his last name? Naruto had a valid reason because Minato was a very known shinobi in the 5 great nations... as the dangerous Yellow Flash of Konoha.

Maito Gai's father is Maito Dai.

So actually, Maito is his official surname.

It's not uncommon of to take the surname of the mother in class based cultures in cases where the mother comes from a prominent family.

With that said probably not the case, BUT Lee was depicted in "foreign" attire and hair style. I say foreign because out of all the characters in Hogakure that generally dress in western or Japanese attire Tenten and pre-Gai Lee are the only ones to have been in traditional Chinese style attire. Perhaps they were born outside the fire nation. Perhaps Gai gathered lee on a mission and never knew it.

The truth is they have to be related
In some way. They not only look too similar, and share personality traits, but they are also the only ninja we've really seen that seem to be genetically probe to only use taijutsu

I was thinking about that too reading the flashback. It would be stranger to think they have the same features, the hairy eyebrows, the same hair and that, and the same strengths and weaknesses by pure random chance. We may find out in Gais death that "Maito Gai, you ARE the father!!" lol

Maybe the mother didnt want him to know Gai was his father or Gai had a reason to hide it and change his last name, dunno.

when i was reading this chap i was like, eithe lee is gai's son or kishi made a mistake not making him his son. it makes no sense how similar they are, they both suck at ninjutsu and genjutsu. the booth look the same besides the shape of their eyes. they are almost copies of each other there has to be some relation.
