Elephant Meaning and Symbolism

Symbolic elephant meaning deals primarily with strength, honor, stability and patience, among other attributes.
To the Hindu way of thought, the elephant is found in the form of Ganesha who is the god of luck, fortune, protection and is a blessing upon all new projects. Ganesha in all his magnificently vibrant elephant glory, is intent onbulldozing obstacles on your behalf (funnily, male elephants are termed "bulls").

Some Asian cultures also believe the elephant is a cosmic creature, and carries the world upon it?s back (much like the tortoise does in some tribal Native American myths).

As a dream animal, elephants come into our dreams it is a message that we are able to deal with any obstacle we are faced with at this time. Dream elephants represent power, sovereignty, stability, and stead-fastness. If you dream that you are riding an elephant this suggests you have a tendancy to be the leader of the family, and others are heavily depending on you. If you dream of elephants in a circus this suggests you have a cavalier attitude about a situation in your life and you may want to invest more attention to it.

We gather more symbolic meaning of elephant by observing it in nature. Specifically, the elephant is considered a symbol of responsibility because it takes great care and responsibility of its offspring as well as their elders.

The elephant also has immense determination and loyalty - always standing up for others and always defending members of the group in its natural habitat.

Elephants also express advanced sensitivity and social connection, particularly during time of death - they travel to a specific place upon their death - fulfilling personal responsibility - even at the end of their days.

So, Gai and Dai have my respects.

It was perfect that it was an elephant. Seriously, why would anyone want it to be a dragon?

it doesnt bother me it being an elephant but to answer your question...

gai's technique seem to represent the 4 celestial guardians of the compass..

morning peacock - the vermillion bird southern suzaku - element fire.. morning peacock looks like fireballs
Afternoon tiger - the white tiger western byako - element wind.. hirudora is a compressed blast of air
gais summoning is a turtle - the black tortoise northern genbu - element water

so from this itself i assumed it was following the myth .. the last guardian is..

the blue dragon Eastern seiryu - element lightning (wood)

so i was sort of expecting a lightning look dragon taijutsu tech

Also, please, state the meaning of the Dragon. Are you suggesting that Gai should instead use a dragon due pure fashion? Please, that's a very pretentious way to use animals...

The elephant fits way better in this context. If the mangaka were drawing things without meaning, then the manga would turn to be just a cheap copy of... dragon ball?

haha yeah but i thought the dragon is n important animal in the japanese mythology :)
And If I were to choose between the 2 I'd definitely take the Dragon.

And that's why I said pretentious. Shen Long is not Japanese (Japan don't use the L in his hiragana/katakana), it is from China, along with the character designs of the Dragon Ball, a manga inspired in the chinese novel Journey to the West.

Japan has the same dragon with the name Shinryu, and the meaning behind this animal is leadership, good luck and improved agriculture. It has nothing to do with Gai...

I'm glad that kishi chose an elephant. I mean, I like dragons but I think that they are overused and no matter how they look, they aren't that original.

Choosing a dragon would have been to bland and generic and honestly it would have made the technique a little lackluster. That is why I commend kishi on choosing a rather original animal for the technique.
