I know Kishi makes loads of parallels in levels it becomes repetiteve, but in this chapter they were not mere devices of relevance.
It was used for cementing the theme of never giving up. It's classic, but the different thing was the characters know that they would fail or die. They are optimists, but they took their risk for the sake of what they believe in.
For example, Gai and Dai have shown similar quirks against their pupils (scolding and hitting):
Both Dai and Gai passed down their techniques that would make them powerful to their beloved pupils:
Both Lee and Gai did not like and stood up when others ridicule their masters:
Both Gai and Lee have doubted theirselves but their masters have lead them:
Or this one:
Not to mention this throwback:
Lee's flashbacks in chuunin exams. Gai raised him to what he wanted to be.
My favorite is probably this though:
^In past Lee woudl expect Gai's acknowledgement and proud, but Gai raised Lee to be someone that would give the "smile" of acknowledgement to him. He passed his torch to his pupil afterall.
Theme of never giving up is always seem to be linked with one's own success. Well Dai have become stonger and died, but he did so while protecting something precious. Lee fought Gaara till the end, he did not win but he protected what he was precious to him. Gai is going in the same way.
They are not "winning", but they are not losing either. Because they are leaving what they have to capable hands to take it further and further.
